Licensed Welder / Boilermaker · The Mobile Welder

Getting a straight answer on mobile welding costs in Sydney can be frustrating. Most welders won't quote over the phone, and "get a free quote" often leads to a callback two days later. This guide gives you the real numbers — from our own published rate card and from research across the Sydney market.

The Short Answer: Sydney Mobile Welding Rates in 2026

Steel welding$110 / hr$90 – $150 / hr
Stainless steel welding$150 / hr$120 – $180 / hr
Aluminium welding$180 / hr$150 – $230 / hr

What Is a Call-Out Fee?

Some mobile welders charge a separate call-out fee to cover travel — this is in addition to their hourly rate. It's common to see call-out fees of $100–$200 in Sydney, sometimes bundled with the first hour of work (e.g. "$460 for travel + first hour, then $120/hr after").

At The Mobile Welder, we don't charge a separate call-out fee within Greater Sydney. Our $350 minimum covers travel and the initial portion of work.

Why Does Aluminium Cost More Than Steel?

Three reasons:

  • Skill level: Aluminium TIG welding takes significantly more experience than basic MIG welding on mild steel. Getting a clean, strong aluminium weld without warping, burn-through, or porosity requires years of practice.
  • Equipment: AC TIG welding machines, argon shielding gas, and aluminium-specific consumables all cost more than basic MIG gear.
  • Preparation: Aluminium must be completely clean before welding — any contamination causes weld failure. The cleaning and setup time is factored into the higher rate.

What Affects the Final Cost?

Beyond the hourly rate, several factors influence what you'll pay on the day:

  • Job complexity: A simple straight weld costs less than a multi-position structural connection.
  • Access: Jobs that require working in confined spaces, at height, or in awkward positions take longer.
  • Materials: If you need us to supply steel, stainless, or aluminium, material costs are added to the invoice.
  • Location: Jobs in outer Western Sydney, the Hills District, or outside the metro area may incur a travel surcharge.
  • Urgency: Emergency and after-hours callouts attract a premium rate.

How to Get the Best Value

  • Be specific when you call. The more detail you can give — metal type, approximate weld length, access conditions — the more accurate the estimate.
  • Choose published pricing. If a welder won't tell you their rate before attending, you have no basis for comparison. Ask for a rate before booking.
  • Batch small jobs. If you have a few minor repairs, doing them in one visit is far more cost-effective than separate call-outs.
  • Consider a site assessment. For larger or complex jobs, our $200 site visit includes a detailed scope and sketch — it can save money by avoiding scope creep.
